The Position:
This position is onsite in our Omaha office, with a hybrid (3 days in office, 2 days remote) work schedule, that requires willingness to flex as needed based on business needs. As the manager of the mortgage underwriting team, you will be responsible for managing and optimizing the underwriting process to meet day to day SLO/SLAs in productivity and quality. You will manage a team of Underwriters responsible for risk analysis of mortgage loans on an individual basis, and carry responsibility for the performance of the team and loan portfolio. You will use data to enhance and streamline the risk approval process that includes assessment of the credit, income, assets, appraisal, and title reviews needed to make appropriate decisions that adhere to underwriting guidelines, regulatory requirements, and risk.
Responsibilities include:
- Manage and mentor a team of underwriters towards company-level production and quality goals within prescribed timeframes
- On a daily basis, assign loans to staff for prompt underwriting decisions
- Assist Underwriters in prioritizing rush loans, conditions and newly submitted loans to meet the needs of our customers and business
- Maintain and update underwriting policies, procedures, and guidelines
- Improve the quality and speed of the underwriting process through increasing the automation by working closely with the technology team
- Constantly review, iterate, and improve the risk approval process to streamline execution while maintaining appropriate risk mitigation
- Collaborate with cross-functional departments on day-to-day operations and new initiatives
- Develop training resources for the underwriting team
- Provide consistent systems feedback to the product team
- Provide training based on post-closing or audit findings
- Conduct periodic loan reviews for quality, and provide recommendations to Chief Credit Officer for lending authority or improvement measures
- Be a strong coach and mentor with a focus on employee development and growth. You will provide performance management as needed in a consistent and fair manner.
- Facilitate and lead change management to ensure understanding and adherence
- Coordinate the resolution of post-closing issues
- Stay abreast of changes in the industry and regulatory landscape
Required qualifications and skills:
- Bachelor’s degree or above, plus 5+ years underwriting management experience. Or 10+ years underwriting management experience in lieu of a degree. Graduate degree and/or CRU - Certified Residential Underwriter designation preferred.
- Current and extensive knowledge of competitive program guidelines
- Knowledge and experience underwriting junior liens
- Experience leading change
- Proven ability to use common sense approach making decisions, with demonstrated ability navigating complex scenarios
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to multitask and flex with a strong attention to detail
