Job Description

Reporting to the Director, Finance – Disease Strategy Teams, the Manager is a key member of Vertex’s Strategy Finance team and the global FP&A organization. This role will lead financial analysis required to inform Disease Strategy Teams (“DSTs”) on key decisions. Financial analyses will include financial modeling, forecasting, and scenario-based valuations. The Manager, Strategy Finance will also play a critical role in creation of the Annual Budget, Long-Term Plan (LRP), and other financial forecasts. The role will partner closely with members of the global CFO organization, including finance teams supporting R&D, Biopharmaceutical Sciences and Manufacturing, and Commercial. This role offers an opportunity to make a lasting impact by driving profitable growth while creating transformative medicines for people with serious diseases.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare a wide range of financial analyses to inform DST decisions on investments.

  • Develop and maintain financial models covering all aspects of biopharmaceutical research, development, manufacturing, and commercialization.

  • Provide Strategy Finance input into regular financial planning processes (Annual Budget, Forecasts, Long-Range Plan), for assigned Disease Areas.

  • Manage Disease Area P&Ls for assigned DSTs, including ensuring consistent presentation of DST finances across Vertex, explanation of variances vs. forecasts, identification of risks/uncertainties, and opportunities for mitigation.

  • Prepare a wide range of presentations for cross-functional stakeholders and senior leaders.

  • Collaborate throughout CFO organization to identify and deliver on process improvement opportunities.

Qualifications:

  • B.S. Degree in Finance, Economics, or related quantitative/analytical field; MBA preferred.

  • 5+ years of relevant finance and industry experience - Biotechnology/Pharmaceutical industry experience preferred but not required.

  • Understanding of biopharmaceutical drug research, development, manufacturing, and commercialization required.

  • Exceptional analytical and financial skills to evaluate a broad range of financial questions – especially valuation, ROI/ROIC, and complex multi-disciplinary business decisions.

  • Experience with Excel and PowerPoint; Experience with Hyperion (or another multidimensional database), business intelligence or visualization tools a plus.

  • Proficient business acumen, judgment and knowledge of the company’s markets/products and industry trends.

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and an eagerness to collaborate with colleagues (within or outside of finance) in sharing insights and learnings. Must be able to work well with senior leaders, peers, and junior team members.

  • Possesses a high degree of ownership over work product with the flexibility to adapt to change.
