Job Description

General Summary:

The External Innovation Senior Manager will support the "search" side of search and evaluation with the primary responsibility of performing scientific review and surveillance to identify relevant scientific information aligning to the company’s interests. This role will apply scientific findings to Vertex's pipeline, framing novel research in the context of business development. In addition, this role will be expected to cover all disease areas and enabling technologies in Vertex's Sandbox and continue to grow their knowledge as the Sandbox and the company’s areas of interest expands.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The core responsibility of this role will be daily surveillance of publications, industry news, and press releases across all scientific areas relevant to the company. Notable findings will be condensed into a daily digest and delivered to a select group of company executives. This role will hone in on what matters and filter the signal-to-noise as the crux of the surveillance role
  • Support various External Innovation projects (e.g., landscaping therapeutic areas or tools, identifying and joining in discussions with experts and key opinion leaders, assisting with diligence projects, gathering and analyzing preclinical and clinical data and performing data analysis, etc.)
  • Knowledge and Skills:

  • Ability to understand how to view scientific research through a business lens, and have the ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment. Should be able to shift gears easily, react to changing business priorities as needed and thrive in a dynamic team environment
  • Strong scientific foundation, particularly in molecular biology and genetics, with the ability to rapidly learn new fields of biology
  • Ability to quickly read and understand scientific literature, along with familiarity on how to find data from pharma/biotech companies (for example: knowing how to search clintrials.gov, search and pull data from conference abstracts and company presentations, etc).
  • Education and Experience:

  • Typically requires PhD and 2+ years of biotech or pharmaceutical experience in drug discovery and/or early development or equivalent relevant experience
