General Summary

Vertex currently operates at the forefront of rare disease scientific innovation and has successfully developed and commercialized multiple breakthrough medicines for Cystic Fibrosis (CF), Sickle Cell Disease and Transfusion-Dependent Beta Thalassemia. In addition to clinical development programs in CF, Vertex has more than a dozen ongoing research programs focused on the underlying mechanisms of other serious diseases including programs in Pain, Type 1 diabetes, APOL-1 Mediated Kidney Disease, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, and Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, among others.

In consideration of our expanding pipeline and an increasingly complex and challenging market access environment, Vertex is expanding its Market Access StrategyPipeline team within US Market Access. Our focus is to extend our expertise in this functional area to deliver impactful market access strategies and contextualize the rapidly evolving healthcare landscape for the pricing and reimbursement of Vertex therapies.

The Director of Market Access Strategy will support the value and access optimization of pipeline assets development pipeline assets across new therapeutic areas. Specifically, the individual will be responsible for influencing the value proposition and message development, supporting the NA competitive and contracting strategy and building the pre-approval plan while shaping the MA launch strategy, ultimately resulting in favorable market access.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate and partner with a highly matrixed global and regional commercial organization to ensure robust value proposition development.

  • Lead and support initiatives to understand, analyze and demonstrate the clinical, economic, and societal value of products to payers, decision-makers and influencers.

  • Identify and address key product barriers to access and performance by applying advanced understanding of and experience with contracting and pricing strategies, payer analytics, and payer market trends.

  • Inform financial forecasts.

  • Develop pre-launch strategy and tactics in coordination with global market access and NA new products teams and flawlessly transition a developed launch strategy to the inline MA team.

  • Lead capability building and projects that advance knowledge of and readiness for the rapidly evolving payer environment.

  • Train and support US Market Access field team(s) as needed.

  • Manage vendor relationships and budgets.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • In-depth understanding of US and CA payer environment including coding, coverage and payment decision-making processes within medical and pharmacy benefit

  • General experience in commercialization and drug / diagnostic development

  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills, including the ability to effectively write and deliver presentations to professionals at all levels.

  • Excellent analytical, strategic thinking and critical thinking skills

  • Ability to perform in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple priorities simultaneously, and work effectively across cross-functional teams.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field (advanced degree preferred)

  • Typically requires 10 years of experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • US Market Access experience required.

  • Pipeline strategy experience preferred.
