Job Description

Vertex currently operates at the forefront of rare disease scientific innovation and has successfully developed and commercialized multiple breakthrough medicines for Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and Sickle Cell Disease. In addition to clinical development programs in CF, Vertex has more than a dozen ongoing research programs focused on the underlying mechanisms of other serious diseases including programs in Type 1 diabetes, hemoglobinopathies, APOL-1 Mediated Kidney Disease, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, and pain.

Reporting to the Global Commercial Strategy Pipeline VP, the successful candidate will play a pivotal role in defining, leading, and supporting global commercial strategy initiatives for Vertex’s early pipeline. This role will partner cross-functionally to a) identify new disease areas for Vertex, b) assess the commercial potential of external opportunities and c) provide commercial strategy for Vertex’s early pipeline. This dynamic and high-profile position will play an important part in setting the strategic direction of Vertex’s early pipeline. This is a hybrid/on-site role based in Boston, MA (3 days onsite, 2 days remote on a weekly basis).

The individual will be responsible for working with leaders across multiple partner lines to shape, develop and enable the next wave of potential targets for Vertex to consider investing in. The role requires strategic and analytics thinking, as well as an ability to manage complex details and drive actions across a variety of areas. The ideal candidate will have a strong scientific, strategic and analytical background, be a self-starter and possess exceptional emotional intelligence, communication skills and judgement. The scope of the role will include all areas in the Vertex research pipeline and require partnership with leaders across the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the commercial assessments of new disease areas, targets, and platforms, working closely with Research, Development, Health Economics and Outcomes Research, Business Development, Finance and Pricing & Market Access

  • Identify new disease candidates for Vertex Pipeline and determine if they merit proposal for inclusion in the Pipeline

  • Contribute to BD assessments and represent Commercial during due diligence

  • Co-lead commercial strategy (with Global Pricing & Market Access) for Vertex’s early pipeline programs, including representing Commercial at the early Disease Strategy Team

  • Develop strong partnerships with functional team members to support business goals

  • Direct development and implementation of strategic and tactical plans for early pipeline

  • Generate and consolidate key stakeholder insights through market research, ad boards, etc.

  • Support long-range planning, including insights, assumptions and slide development

  • Support the VP Pipeline in defining and developing high-impact executive, cross-functional, and cross-team initiatives. Oversee or manage key meetings for the early global commercial team, develop agendas, and ensure that important decisions and action items are documented and fully addressed

  • Lead or manage additional special projects and high-profile initiatives, as appropriate. Identify and set plan to proactively address business needs to ensure future success of organization

  • Act as a liaison between the VP and cross-functional colleagues to ensure alignment and coordination on a wide variety of cross-functional research initiatives

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Advanced degree preferred

  • 10+ years of progressive, relevant experience with demonstrated experience in commercial strategy or marketing, and experience organizing and directing multiple teams and departments

  • Outstanding communication of information and ideas, both written and verbal, to diverse audiences, including executives. Strong presentation-building abilities

  • Strong collaboration skills, with an ability to influence multiple stakeholders. Builds mutual trust, respect and cooperation among team members. Employs active listening skills

  • Proven project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities; adapt to new projects rapidly and effectively; strategic thinker with a proven track record of driving for implementation

  • Demonstrated analytical and information technology skills

  • Self-motivated; acts independently and prioritizes appropriately; embraces unexpected changes or challenges and drives to improved solutions

  • Navigates organizational complexities, recommends solutions, and promotes collaboration across functions
