Job Description

General Summary:

Reporting to the Associate Director of Financial Planning and Analysis, the Manager of FP&A is a key member of Vertex’s G&A Finance team, partnering closely with the rapidly growing and dynamic Data, Technology, and Engineering team (DTE) as part of the Chief Science Officer Organization to drive strong financial management, forecast accuracy, and transformation. Potential to consider Senior Manager level for role based on experience and qualifications.

The candidate will play a key role in business partnering with members of the DTE team in helping them to achieve their financial goals & targets, including support of forecasting, budgeting, long range planning processes, month end close activities, variance analysis, and other ad hoc financial support. They will serve as a strategic advisor and subject matter expert for their business partners, including helping to educate and train on best practices to improve continue to build financial acumen across the team. They will also help support continuous process improvement across DTE and G&A Finance and will leverage lessons learned to work with peers to develop/share best practices and improve processes on a broader scope.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Finance Business Partner for members of the DTE team, DSS team, and BD External Innovation team, providing financial direction and insight including identification of key value drivers and Business KPIs, helping functions deliver their short term and long-term goals through proactive day-to-day support, challenge, influence, and insight.

  • Helps manage the financial performance management process for DTE (objective setting, budget vs. actuals, etc.), including the monthly forecast process, with a focus on influencing business operations and decisions through an understanding of the key drivers of short-term performance and communicating the range of possible outcomes.

  • Manages the financial planning process for responsible groups (budget, forecast, long range plan) to provide insightful and influential forward-looking direction, to develop key scenarios, and to identify key risks/uncertainties and plans for potential mitigation.

  • Manages month end close activities including accruals, journal entries, purchase order management, variance analysis, and management reporting, ensuring accuracy in financial results and clear understanding of key drivers.

  • Leads and supports various process improvement projects that span across DTE and the Finance organization.

  • Builds analytics that support business case-based decision making for investments in the DTE team.

  • Develops and maintains reporting solutions based on financial data, leveraging Essbase, Hyperion Planning, OBIEE, and Power BI

  • Partners with Human Resources on Headcount reporting, forecasting and planning.

  • Works closely with other members of the CFO organization including Corporate Finance, International Finance and Accounting to maintain a continuous improvement mindset and promote strong communication and efficient processes.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong analytical and financial skills to evaluate a broad range of financial questions—especially valuation, ROI/ROIC, GAAP vs. Non-GAAP and P&L/Balance Sheet analysis/impacts and complex business decisions.

  • Advanced technical skills including PowerPoint and Excel skills (advanced formulas and the ability to manage and map large data sets, Macro/VBA expertise highly preferred)

  • Strong knowledge of financial systems, multidimensional financial databases, and business intelligence tools, experience with Oracle and Hyperion products a plus

  • Strong business acumen and judgment, and knowledge of the company's markets/products and industry trends.

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and an eagerness to collaborate with colleagues (within or outside of finance) in sharing insights and learnings and partnering to ensure timely execution of project plans.

  • Possesses a continuous improvement mindset, with flexibility and ability to adapt to change and to work in a fast-paced and evolving environment (prioritization and problem-solving key)

Education and Experience:

  • Typically requires 5-7 years of relevant financial experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience working with international teams and foreign currencies.

  • Experience with continuous process improvement and change management, experience with Lean tools/philosophies
