The Vertex Internship Program offers students the opportunity to learn about the pharmaceutical industry from a hands-on perspective. Job Summary:
We are seeking a graduate student to join Vertex for an internship experience during summer 2024 in the Data and Computational Sciences department. We are looking for an exceptional candidate to assist with enhancing our current biological target prediction capabilities. The summer intern project will focus on evaluating target prediction machine learning models in the public domain as well as building target prediction models using Vertex data. No prior experience working in industry is required.
Key Responsibilities:
The candidate will be expected to review the literature on biological target prediction of small molecules
The candidate is expected to implement target prediction models from the public domain
Benchmark andd re-build best performing models using Vertex data
Following guidance from their mentor, the candidate must have the ability to work independently and as part of a team
The candidate must be proactive in engaging for support and seeking guidance when needed
The candidate will be required to regularly present their progress in formal and informal settings to colleagues
The primary deliverable will be a Python implementation of biological target prediction models for small molecules that incorporates public data (ie, ChEMBL) as well as Vertex proprietary data. Additionally, a summary report of describing the implementation and benchmark results will be expected. If time permits, a subsequent deliverable will be to integrate this into the global Vertex predictive modeling infrastructure.
Qualifications:
Master’s Degree (or in progress), or Ph.D. (or in progress) in Machine Learning, Statistics, Cheminformatics, or a related field with some experience in the use or development of computational methods
Background machine learning and/or statistics
Strong proficiency in Python
Proven technical proficiency and demonstrated skill in planning and interpreting analytical work
Effective communicator (written and verbal), especially within area(s) of expertise
Experience with applying computational methods and/or cheminformatics/bioinformatics tools to large-scale data
Exposure to basic statistical and/or machine learning methods
Experience with databases and chemogenomics data.
Awareness of software design principles
Legally authorized to work in the United States
Candidate must be enrolled in an advanced degree program if graduating Spring 2024
