Job Description

General Summary:

Vertex is seeking a talented individual to join our Process Development team as a Principal Scientist. The primary focus of this role is to lead part of the process development/engineering scale up activities for drug substance processes for one of our key cell and gene therapy assets. The position is responsible for all internal process development work, translating small scale experiments which generate fundamental process understanding into bioreactor systems which can be scaled up according to program requirements. This role may also be accountable for technology transfer of manufacturing process to external partners and/or the working with external partners to develop scalable processes on behalf of Vertex. The position will be based in our Boston, MA facilities.

The successful candidate will be a subject matter expert in protein biochemistry, process engineering, or similar relevant field(s), have a solid technical operations background, as well as have an understanding of how to manage external partners.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and execution of experimentation to develop robust and scalable manufacturing processes for cell therapy products and implementation to support programs in clinical development.
  • Lead the evaluation and implementation of novel technologies and equipment platforms for next-generation cell therapy manufacturing processes.
  • Serve as an internal technical subject matter expert and work with internal pilot team to transfer to manufacturing sites
  • Build and lead a team of bioprocess engineers who will work closely together within a highly matrixed, cross-functional team to deliver program goals
  • Collaborate effectively with internal and external partners and lead projects with a fully integrated team to facilitate successful outcomes.
  • Coordinate resources and sets priorities for own team, contributing to the overall goals of the department
  • Generate and review technical reports, regulatory filings, source documents, patents and external publications.

Minimum Requirements

  • A BS in Biochemistry, Engineering, Biology or related discipline with 10+ years of industry experience or an MS with 7+ years of industry experience or a PhD with 4-7 years of industry experience
  • Expertise independently conducting and directing the design, execution, analysis, and documentation of cell culture processes for biologics and/or cell therapy products
  • Strong fundamental knowledge in cell culture process development, bioreactors across scales, perfusion technology as well as knowledge of recent advances, and challenges in the field
  • Experience in evaluating and introducing novel technology platforms into process development and manufacturing
  • Experience in design of experiments (DOE) and statistical analysis
  • Experience leading a team of scientists/engineers, minimum of 2-3 years of direct management experience
  • Must be able to travel domestically and/or internationally, up to 25% of the time
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to handle multiple tasks while meeting timelines and adapting to rapidly changing priorities
  • Excellent organizational skills and high attention to details
  • Some weekend rotational work to support cell culture activities will be required
