POSITION SUMMARY:
The Manager, Instrumentation Engineer will be responsible for assessing non-GxP facility feasibility for new or moving lab-based equipment. This role will mitigate business risk by ensuring equipment has been assessed to align with facility’s capacity – including but not limited to electrical, mechanical, structural and utility assessments - prior to procurement. Role also considers holistic impact assessment of procuring multiple pieces of equipment for the lab or related spaces. This role will work closely with Facilities, Lab Instrumentation, Space Planning, Engineering and PMO teams as well and end users within R&D.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Complete facility assessment for equipment at time of CapEx budget approval and/or procurement execution.
Support technical assessment needed ahead of building shutdowns.
Support technical assessment related to lab equipment failures, as needed.
Providing support on new/existing/relocation requests as needed, including support of these projects managed by the PMO team.
Supporting R&D end users with equipment that requires design conversations/considerations (i.e. not off-the-shelf).
Provide and promote high standards of professionalism, integrity, and leadership, both within and outside the organization, appropriately representing Vertex core values, business philosophies, protocols, and standards.
Cultivate change and innovation by seeking opportunities to strengthen and improve existing services and operations.
TECHNICAL AND COMMUNICATIVE SKILLS:
Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing (MEP) engineering expertise.
Ability to read P&ID drawings for building systems and can properly execute walkdown of lab and facility areas.
Eagerness to understand instrument design beyond his/her subject matter expertise.
The candidate must be able to build and maintain strong, cross-functional relationships with key stakeholders and be a trusted team leader.
Ability to work at a fast pace on multiple projects of a critical nature.
Strong understanding of operations principles and practices.
Ability to assess issues with a high degree of critical thinking, sound judgment, and the ability to adapt to changes in priorities or the work environment.
Ability to take qualitative equipment requirements and convert to technical specification line items.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) required. Mechanical, electrical, or chemical engineering degree preferred.
6+ years of experience in biotech/pharmaceutical laboratory environment
